If you decide to get a dog from a shelter there are some things you need to do before you bring it home. First, you should remove all dangerous and valuable items - chemicals, cleaning supplies, clothes, shoes, etc. - from the house or field. This means keeping cabinets covered, kitchen counters and floors clean, and electrical wires and cables out of sight or embedded in walls. Make sure your dog has suitable toys to satisfy his interest - this can help. If you have young children, introduce your dog and child gradually. Do it slowly and consistently so that their interaction is positive. It's harder to do if you already have other pets. If they don't become friends right away, keep them in separate rooms and gradually allow them to spend more and more time together. AFTER YOU GET A DOG.
